The HCI Course Materials consists of manuals and resource guides created by Kaiser Permanente's National Linguistic & Cultural Programs in Oakland, California. They are made available free of charge to partner educational institutions, who in turn distribute them to their students.

The course materials can be downloaded from our site if you are a partner institution. They are not publicly available. Some of the materials used in class instructions are:

Basic Medical Knowledge
The Basic Medical Knowledge Resource Guide provides students with general medical content, specialized vocabularies, and related clinical encounter scenarios in general medicine and specialty areas such as:

• Cardiovascular System
• Immune System
• Men’s and Women’s Health
• Nervous System
• Obstetrics and Pediatrics
• Pharmacy Care

Principles of Interpreting
This manual contains information necessary to develop the skills and knowledge required of trained health care interpreters such as:

• Roles and Modes of Interpreting
• Standards of Practice
• Code of Ethics
• Diversity and Cultural Competency
• Effective Communication Skills

The Instructor’s Guide includes notes, tools, and templates to aid in the facilitation of the Health Care Interpreter Certificate Program courses.

Practice of Interpreting
The Practice of Interpreting Resource Guide provides students, language lab coaches, and instructors numerous role-play exercises for interpreting practice.

The role-plays range in difficulty from simple to complex, based on the level of skill and knowledge required of the interpreter in the encounter.

The role-plays also cover a variety of medical and cultural topics, providing the interpreting students practice in the interpretation of medical terminology and experience with cross-cultural communication.

Language Lab
The Language Lab Guidebook provides language lab coaches information and activities specific to helping students enhance specialized linguistic proficiency in English and their language of service within a cultural context. The Guidebook is also used by the language lab coaches to plan language lab sessions. Activities include:

• Role-plays
• Vocabulary flash-cards
• Anatomy diagrams
• Sight translation practice text

Video
The Building Qualified Health Care Interpreter Capacity in the Community video is a comprehensive training video designed for those teaching health care interpreting; however, health care professionals in general would also find the content useful in meeting the following objectives:

• Learn how to effectively work with interpreters.
• Gain knowledge and insight for providing interpreting services.
• Understand the core competencies required of a health care interpreter: their roles and responsibilities, and techniques used in the interpreting session.
• Understand the impact of language and culture to communication.
